Bio-inspired natural sunlight-pumped lasers

Even though sunlight is by far the most abundant renewable energy source available to humanity, its dilute and variable nature has kept efficient ways collect, store, distribute this tantalisingly out of reach. Turning incoherent supply provided Sun into a coherent laser beam would overcome several practical limitations inherent in using as clean energy: beams travel nearly losslessly over large distances, they are effective at driving chemical reactions which convert energy. Here we propose bio-inspired blueprint for novel type with aim upgrading unconcentrated natural beam. Our proposed design constitutes different path towards sunlight-pumped lasers. In order achieve lasing extremely power sunlight, here medium comprised molecular aggregates inspired architecture photosynthetic complexes. Such complexes exhibit very internal efficiency harvesting photons from sunlight. Specifically, consider hybrid structure, where purple bacteria (Rhodobacter sphaeroides) surround suitably engineered dimer composed two strongly coupled chromophores. We show that if pumped surrounding complex, efficiently collects concentrates solar energy, core structure can reach population inversion, threshold under The principles will also pave way developing other quantum devices.
